Brenau University
1 Centennial Circle
Gainesville, Georgia 30501

For over 120 years, Brenau has prepared women to be confident, dynamic, and successful.
College Description
The campus of Brenau University is one of the most attractive in the south. Stately, traditional buildings-some listed on the National Register of Historic Places-combined with centuries-old oaks and evergreens, spreading lawns, blossoming trees, and shrubs create an impressive picture. Once inside, the buildings appear like new, with attractive furnishings and up-to-date technology. The University is located in a quiet, safe residential area near the center of Gainesville, Georgia, the heart of a progressive county of over 100,000. Brenau is easily accessible to a multitude of diversions. Lake Lanier, Georgia's largest waterway, offers a full spectrum of water sports. Nearby mountains invite year-round recreation, from snow skiing to hiking. Only 50 miles down the expressway is Atlanta, with all the advantages you'd expect in a major metropolitan center.
Academic Life
The Women's College program offers 36 majors, including health and environmental sciences, business, education, communications, legal studies, liberal arts, and fine arts. Ninety-six percent of the faculty hold the doctorate or the highest degree awarded in their field, and many have a wealth of professional experience outside the academic community. In addition to the lecture format, a variety of instructional methods allow students to learn by participation in discussion sessions and in hands-on activities. Internships are an important part of the instructional program. Recently, students have interned with the Cable News Network (CNN), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Atlanta Symphony, Walt Disney World, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, the Utah Shakespeare Festival, and the Atlanta Apparel Mart. Transfer students are welcome in all majors and, for several years, the graduating class of the Women's College has been slightly larger than the entering freshman class. The typical class size for freshman-level courses is 20-22. Upper-division classes often have 8-12 students.
Campus Life
About 650 of the 2,300 students at Brenau University attend the Women's College. Approximately one half of the Women's College students live in a variety of on-campus housing options. Residence halls offer semi-private and private rooms in all shapes and sizes. Each room has either a private bath or shares a bath with an adjoining room. Each room comes with local phone service (including the Atlanta area), 50-channel cable TV (including the Brenau channel), and fiber-optic connections for your computer to access the library or the Internet. Computers in each residence area offer 24-hour access to these resources. Apartments and restored period homes are housing options for upper-class and nontraditional-age students. Forty clubs and organizations include eight national sororities (with chapter houses), and political, social, environmental, and honorary societies. With several large universities in the area, there are opportunities for social activities on all campuses.
Facilities and Resources
The Brenau Trustee Library is fully automated, with CD-ROM and Internet access. There are computer labs for class and student use in the library and in the classroom buildings. The campus is primarily IBM and compatibles; however, there are Apple Macs in the areas of education, music, and science. Brenau has a digital TV production studio and a full-time FM-stereo radio station. The gymnasium and pool have undergone major renovation, which resulted in a comprehensive wellness center for student and staff use. The nursing department includes replicas of hospital rooms and is located adjacent to the Northeast Georgia Medical Center. Occupational therapy students enjoy the latest in laboratory facilities. The newly renovated Owens Student Center includes the Campus Shop bookstore, post office, classrooms, and offices for student personnel and student organizations. Hopkins Dining Hall is more like a restaurant than a college cafeteria-with carpet, tablecloths and fresh flowers, and a variety of menu choices.
Athletics/Sports
Labs, books, and computers are not the exclusive ingredients to becoming a well-rounded, successful woman. Brenau offers you the complete package: from swimming in our Olympic-size pool and diving center to P.E. ballet and modern and jazz dance. You can pump iron or jog the Brenau mile. If you're into fitness exercise or have a more competitive streak, you'll find opportunities here to get into shape. Brenau's tennis, volleyball, and soccer teams compete in the NAIA. The tennis team has been nationally ranked in the top 10 each of the last five years and is currently ranked number two in the U.S. in NAIA. The crew and cross-country teams compete as independents. Our home rowing course is the 1996 Olympic rowing venue on Lake Lanier.
Financial Aid
There is a common misconception that a private college education is beyond the financial reach of many families. In fact, approximately 80% of the Women's College students receive financial aid in some form. A comprehensive program of financial aid and scholarships based on academics, leadership, talent, and sports can make Brenau affordable to students from diverse geographic and cultural backgrounds. Academic scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis without regard to financial need. Students who require additional financial resources to attend complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Award letters are mailed on a rolling basis.
Admission Requirements
Candidates for admission should have completed a college-preparatory sequence including four years of English, three years of math, three years of science (health science, biology, and pre-professional applicants for medical, dental, or veterinary programs should have four years of science, including chemistry) and at least two years of social science. The factors considered in the selection process are: High school record (including both content and GPA), ACT or SAT scores, and the recommendation of the guidance counselor. Students who wish to major in occupational therapy will be invited to interview for selection if academic criteria are met. Students interested in the arts and communications should plan to audition or present a portfolio of work for review by the faculty. The Learning Center offers opportunities for students with diagnosed learning disabilities to participate in regular college programs with assistance from professional tutors. Contact the admissions office for specific information on how to apply for Learning Center assistance.
