C.W.Post Campus
Long Island University
Brookville, NY 11548

College Description:
C.W. Post Campus is one of the six campuses of Long Island University (LIU), the seventh-largest private university in the U.S. Founded in 1954, the campus is situated on the North Shore of Long Island, approximately 25 miles from mid-Manhattan, on the former estate of cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post.

C.W. Post's attractive 307.9-acre campus is nestled in the quiet, safe suburban community of Brookville. Bus transportation is available to the Long Island Rail Road's stations in Greenvale and Hicksville and to nearby communities. Two major shopping centers in the immediate area include good restaurants, movie theaters, and department stores. The cultural opportunities in New York City, only 40 minutes away, are also easily accessible to students.

Ninety-one percent of the more than 4,700 undergraduates are from New York; the remainder come from all parts of the United States and forty-eight other countries.

Academic Life:
Since 1959, Long Island University has also been offering undergraduate and graduate programs at its Brentwood Campus. Undergraduate programs at Brentwood combine courses in liberal arts and sciences with professional education in fields such as accountancy, business administration, and criminal justice. Master's degree programs include business administration (fast-track M.B.A.), criminal justice (fast-track M.S.), and education (M.S./M.S.Ed.) in the areas of school counseling, early childhood, childhood, childhood/special education, childhood/literacy, special education, literacy, and school district administrator. Graduate course are offered in conjunction with a number of different programs offered by the C.W. Post Campus, including library and information science, mental health counseling, school business administration, health-care administration, and public administration.

To be eligible for a bachelor's degree, a student must complete at least 129 credits, 44 of which must be taken in general core courses. The B.F.A. degree programs require between 134 and 136 credits. All students in good academic standing, including freshmen, may take two elective courses per academic year (including summer school sessions) on a pass/fail basis for regular credit. A total of 24 credits may be taken on this basis.

The Long Island University Plan (LIU Plan) offers students a complete counseling network that ties together all academic, career, and financial counseling for students, beginning before enrollment and extending throughout the undergraduate years. Freshmen meet with faculty mentors and peer counselors in a 1-credit freshman seminar, College 101. The plan also provides opportunities to earn income while gaining hands-on career experience. Through C.W. Post's award-winning, nationally recognized program in cooperative education, students build a resume, explore potential careers, establish contacts through networking, and earn money to defray the cost of a college education. C.W. Post places more than 250 students in paid cooperative education positions each year.

C.W. Post is liberal arts based, and all undergraduates, regardless of major, are exposed to different ways of thinking through courses in a broad range of subject areas, such as math, English, fine arts, history, and sociology. The campus's Writing-Across-the-Curriculum program offers courses in all majors to help students improve their writing skills.

C.W. Post has more than 300 full-time faculty members. Approximately eighty-six percent of the full-time faculty members have the highest degree in their fields.

An outstanding honors and merit scholarship program provides talented students with an academic environment designed to help them achieve their greatest potential. Approximately 9 percent of undergraduates who have demonstrated outstanding intellectual potential and academic achievement are selected to participate in this nationally respected program. Classes are usually limited to 20 students and run as discussion-style seminars in which the approach to the material is more sophisticated than in regular classes. Students also work independently with professors on tutorial and thesis projects and enhance their study with field trips to New York City, participation in national conferences, and lectures with noted guest speakers.
