C.W.Post
Campus College Description: C.W. Post's attractive 307.9-acre campus is nestled in the quiet, safe suburban community of Brookville. Bus transportation is available to the Long Island Rail Road's stations in Greenvale and Hicksville and to nearby communities. Two major shopping centers in the immediate area include good restaurants, movie theaters, and department stores. The cultural opportunities in New York City, only 40 minutes away, are also easily accessible to students. Ninety-one percent of the more than 4,700 undergraduates are from New York; the remainder come from all parts of the United States and forty-eight other countries. Academic Life: To be eligible for a bachelor's degree, a student must complete at least 129 credits, 44 of which must be taken in general core courses. The B.F.A. degree programs require between 134 and 136 credits. All students in good academic standing, including freshmen, may take two elective courses per academic year (including summer school sessions) on a pass/fail basis for regular credit. A total of 24 credits may be taken on this basis. The Long Island University Plan (LIU Plan) offers students a complete counseling network that ties together all academic, career, and financial counseling for students, beginning before enrollment and extending throughout the undergraduate years. Freshmen meet with faculty mentors and peer counselors in a 1-credit freshman seminar, College 101. The plan also provides opportunities to earn income while gaining hands-on career experience. Through C.W. Post's award-winning, nationally recognized program in cooperative education, students build a resume, explore potential careers, establish contacts through networking, and earn money to defray the cost of a college education. C.W. Post places more than 250 students in paid cooperative education positions each year. C.W. Post is liberal arts based, and all undergraduates, regardless of major, are exposed to different ways of thinking through courses in a broad range of subject areas, such as math, English, fine arts, history, and sociology. The campus's Writing-Across-the-Curriculum program offers courses in all majors to help students improve their writing skills. C.W. Post has more than 300 full-time faculty members. Approximately eighty-six percent of the full-time faculty members have the highest degree in their fields. An outstanding honors and merit scholarship program provides
talented students with an academic environment designed to help them achieve
their greatest potential. Approximately 9 percent of undergraduates who
have demonstrated outstanding intellectual potential and academic achievement
are selected to participate in this nationally respected program. Classes
are usually limited to 20 students and run as discussion-style seminars
in which the approach to the material is more sophisticated than in regular
classes. Students also work independently with professors on tutorial
and thesis projects and enhance their study with field trips to New York
City, participation in national conferences, and lectures with noted guest
speakers. There are also accelerated five-year dual-degree programs:
B.S./M.S. in accounting, B.S./M.S. in biology, B.A./M.S. in criminal justice,
B.A./M.B.A. in international studies/business administration, B.S./M.S.
in nutrition, B.A./M.A. in political science, B.S./M.P.A. in health-care
administration, B.S./M.P.A. in public administration, B.A./M.P.A. in political
science/public administration, B.S./M.S. in nursing/family nurse practitioner
studies, and B.S./M.S. in nursing/advanced practice nursing. C.W. Post
also offers thirty-six dual bachelor's/master's degree programs in education,
which cover infancy, preschool, and elementary, middle, and high school. Campus Life / Campus
Visit More than 1,000 cultural and entertainment activities are offered on campus throughout the year, and most are open to the general public. Facilities and Resources: The B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library is one of the largest
research libraries in New York and houses nearly 2.7 million volumes as
part of the Long Island University System. The multilevel library is a
digital powerhouse, with high-speed Web connections, online subscriptions,
and more than 100 database services. The library features the nationally
respected Center for Business and Information Research, Media Center,
Rare Books Collection, and Government Information Department. All students
have free e-mail and Internet access. More than 500 computers are available
in several buildings and residence halls. Networked "smart classrooms"
are located throughout the campus. Science, art, and education laboratories
are fully equipped. Other facilities include an interfaith center, two
modern student centers, and a world-famous concert hall that seats 2,200. Financial Aid /
Scholarships
The LIU Plan combines scholarships and cooperative education to provide a high-quality education at an affordable cost. All C.W. Post students are strongly encouraged to participate in paid professional internships (also known as cooperative education). Students gain work experience related to their major, begin to build a resume, and help reduce their costs by supplementing financial aid with co-op earnings. The C.W. Post Campus requires all applicants for financial
aid to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), College
Scholarship Service PROFILE, and New York State TAP Application (New York
State applicants only), in addition to the application for admission.
All applicants seeking financial assistance are strongly urged to apply
early in order to be assured of full exposure to the funding possibilities.
The recommended submission date for application is March 15 in order to
meet the University's deadline of May 15 each year. Financial aid is granted
only after a student has been offered admission. All aid is granted for
one year but is renewable, based on published criteria and federal and
state eligibility guidelines. Classes are offered year-round. Students may begin studies in the fall, winter, spring, or summer semesters. Campus tours are available Monday through Saturday and by appointment. Summer and holiday schedules vary. Admission decisions are made on a rolling basis, but those wishing to be considered for scholarships should consult with the admissions office for application deadlines. The Office of Admissions is open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
