The Los Angeles Educational Experience

Students in the Los Angeles metropolitan area enjoy numerous educational, cultural and entertainment opportunities. Colleges, universities and career schools offering thousands of programs abound in this Mecca of intellectual activity.
Loyola Marymount University is located on a 125-acre mesa that literally overlooks the southwest section of Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean from Malibu to Santa Monica. LMU is near the metropolitan complex but enjoys the slower pace of its residential community. The Los Angeles Airport is ten minutes away and nearby freeways provide easy access to the city and its many activities. American Intercontinental University, close to Marina del Rey, is near the DreamWorks complex. Nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains, the Pepperdine University campus offers the serenity of Malibu. The winding seashore and the rugged beauty of Malibu Canyon provides an environment conducive to study while the moderate climate permits year-round outdoor recreation. Westwood, home to the University of California Los Angeles, is considered to be one of the best college towns in the country. Otis College of Art and Design is located on the west side of L.A. in the heart of southern Californias technical film and digital imaging industries. The nearby communities of Venice and Santa Monica are home to many of the areas finest art studios and galleries. The University of Judaisms Campus is located in Bel Air, one of the most desirable communities in California. Within thirty minute driving radius are Hollywood, the Getty Museum and the beautiful beaches. Columbia College-Hollywood makes the most of its location in the San Fernando Valley, heart of the motion picture and television industries. Surrounded by such entertainment giants as Disney Studios, Warner Brothers, Universal, NBC and CBS, there exist many opportunities for those who desire to pursue a career in the industry. Columbia Colleges Tarzana Campus is located in the histories Panavision building, just north of downtown. The Los Angeles metropolitan area serves not only as a business, financial and design center, but also as one of the great shipping centers of the world. Located in Burbank, Woodbury University is closely linked to these commercial communities that provide students with a firsthand laboratory in which to study the professional positions they have set as their goals.
Los Angeles was a settlement of a few thousand people when the University of Southern California opened its doors in 1880. At the time, the University consisted of a single wooden building and fifty-three students. Now, it is the second largest private university in the country. USCs location in the heart of Los Angeles exposes undergraduates to the cultural, commercial, and political diversity of one of the worlds great cosmopolitan centers. USC students have always taken advantage of the Universitys setting, obtaining internships with major corporations and new technology ventures and positions in federal, state and city agencies; local galleries; museums; and the media. Across the street from USC in Exposition Park are three museums, including the new California Museum of Science and Industry; a famous Rose Garden; and the Memorial Coliseum. Located nearby along the Figueroa Boulevard Sports and Entertainment Corridor are the Shrine Auditorium, frequent host to the Grammy and Oscar events, the enormous Los Angeles Convention Center; the Staples Arena, which hosts the Lakers, Kings and Clippers, and the Los Angeles Music Center, which offers plays and concerts.
The Claremont Colleges are a consortium of five distinct colleges (Pitzer, Claremont McKenna, Harvey Mudd, Pomona and Scripps). They are located in Claremont, a suburban community of 37,000 about 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. It is a pleasant town with tree-lined streets and well-tended homes. Other educational resources in Claremont are the School of Theology, the Rancho Santa Ana Botanical Gardens, the Blaisdell Institute for Advanced Study in World Cultures and Religions, and the Institute for Antiquity and Christianity.
The Village, home to attractive restaurants, art galleries, and shops, is only a short walk from the colleges. All of the cultural, educational, social, and entertainment centers of greater Los Angeles are nearby, including major art museums, a ranking symphony orchestra, abundant theater productions, and a variety of professional sports teams. Mount Baldy is close by for skiing and hiking, and the Pacific Ocean beaches and the Mojave Desert are each only an hour away. The weather throughout the academic year is usually warm, dry and sunny.
