Founded in 1919, Kettering University is private and enrolls approximately 2,500 undergraduate students.  Located in east-central Michigan, 60 miles west of Lake Huron and Canada and 60 miles north of Detroit, Flint is a city of 135,000 residents with a metropolitan area population of 450,000.

Academic Life 

Kettering University offers a five-year cooperative program leading to the designated Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Systems Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering degrees; a Bachelor of Science in Business and Industrial Management degree with concentrations in accounting, finance, information systems, manufacturing management, marketing, and materials management; as well as designated Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics, Computer Science, and Environmental Chemistry. 

Each program at Kettering University has its own sequence requirements, although 180 credit hours are generally required, including thesis credit hours.  The five-year program involves nine semesters of cooperative and academic work and a tenth semester of thesis preparation.  Students alternate twelve-week periods of academic study on the campus in Flint with twelve-week periods of relevant work experience with their corporate employer.  The academic year consists of two 12-week academic terms and two 12-week terms of paid work experience. 

Campus Life 

Kettering University students enjoy an active college life with a wide range of clubs, organizations, and an exciting intramural sports program.  Eleven professional societies are active on campus and there are 14 national fraternities and six sororities.  Student government represents the interests and needs of the students and contributes to their educational development in the areas of leadership [skills, self-confidence, interpersonal relationships, and organizational operations. 

A varied program of sports, fitness, and recreational activities is available.  1 445-student residence hall is located on campus as well as athletic fields, tennis courts, and a recreation center with an Olympic-size, six-lane swimming pool, basketball and racquetball courts, aerobic fitness rooms, and a full line of Nautilus equipment.  A public golf course is adjacent to the campus. 

Facilities 

Classrooms, laboratories, and offices of the academic departments are located in the Academic Building with more than 95,000 square feet devoted to labs.  In addition to the traditional laboratory facilities expected at any of the top engineering schools, Kettering University has labs to demonstrate and experiment with a wide variety of technologies found in industry.  The instrumentation in some labs is generally found only in graduate school facilities at other colleges.  The are manufacturing, laser, radioisotope, heat transfer, electricity and solid-state electronics, metallurgy, computer-aided design (CAD), computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM), human factors, digital and analog computer, robotics, holography, and electron microscopy laboratories.  Computer support for students includes VAX-11/785 and Sun-4/490 mainframes, dedicated and networked for CAD workstations, and more than 300 microprocessors, of which 125 are networked.  Each student has unlimited 24-hour access to computer resources.
