College Description
Founded in 1845, Limestone College is a fully accredited, private, coeducational liberal arts college. The College maintains a small student body (enrollment 350) and a well-qualified faculty in order to create an atmosphere in which each student will develop intellectually, physically, and socially. The College endeavors to help students prepare for a satisfying, useful life through the development of meaningful leisure-time activities, effective communication skills, responsible decision-making abilities, and lifelong aspirations. In addition to its programs on campus, Limestone offers several of its academic majors in an accelerated evening and Saturday format (Block Program) at several locations throughout South Carolina. These programs are intended primarily for working adults. Gaffney, a small city with a population of 25,000, provides an ideal setting for a college campus. Whereas the distractions associated with a large city are absent from everyday life, the cultural programs and services offered in such places are within a 50-mile radius of the cities of Charlotte, Spartanburg, and Greenville, all connected to Gaffney by Interstate 86. The climate is free from extremes of heat or cold. The well-known resort areas of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the beaches of the Atlantic Coast are accessible for weekend visits. In the immediate area, facilities are available for all water sports, horseback riding, golf, tennis, and skiing.
Academic Life
The course of study leading to the B.A., B.S., or A.A. degree consists of four elements: requirements in communication and quantitative skills; a general liberal arts program, involving five different subject groups; courses in the major; and appropriate electives. The baccalaureate degree programs require the completion of a minimum of 120 semester hours. Advanced placement and credit are given for scores of 3 or higher on the Advanced Placement examinations of the College Board. An honors program involving special courses, seminars, and lectures is available for exceptional students. Admission to this program is contingent upon outstanding high school grades and scores on the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT I) of the College Board, the completion of a special application, and an interview. Almost 10 percent of all Limestone students are enrolled in this rigorous academic program. A Program for Alternative Learning Styles (PALS) is available for qualified students with certified learning disabilities who might not otherwise succeed at the college level.
Campus Life
The 115-acre Limestone campus is well laid out for pleasant college living. The classrooms, library, laboratories, auditorium, bookstore, post office, and administrative offices are housed in buildings that border the central and circular drives, making each easily accessible to the others. The back campus has a plaza of four dormitories, and a cafeteria is located nearby. Extracurricular activities play a vital part in the development of all students at Limestone College. Students who are interested in music have the opportunity to participate in several instrumental and choral ensembles. The Student Government Association exemplifies the College's democratic tradition and the principles of honor and individual responsibility. It is every student's privilege and responsibility to participate in the government of the learning community of which he or she is a member. The more highly organized activities, including student organizations and social events, are coordinated through the association. The College also has a student newspaper, literary magazine, and yearbook.
Facilities and Resources
The Curtis Administration Building houses a DEC VAX-11/750 computer with fourteen terminals. The A. J. Eastwood Library, a modern, air-conditioned structure, houses approximately 90,000 volumes. Fullerton Auditorium, with a seating capacity of 975, serves for drama and musical productions and is one of the finest such facilities in the state of South Carolina. The Agnew-Thompson Observatory serves as an excellent facility for astronomy classes and avid amateur astronomers. There are also well-equipped laboratories and computer labs.
Athletics/Sports
Activities offered include intercollegiate athletics in men's baseball, basketball, golf, lacrosse, soccer, and tennis and in women's basketball, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, and volleyball. The Timken LYFE Center is a physical education complex that houses the gymnasium, an AAU-size swimming pool, and athletic training facilities. The College also has eight lighted tennis courts, a baseball field, a softball field, and a soccer/lacrosse field enclosed by a quarter-mile paved track.
Financial Aid
Limestone College endeavors to meet the financial need of any qualified student through scholarships, grants, loans, work-study opportunities, or a combination of these. Limestone also offers merit scholarships to students who meet the requirements of the honors program as well as to those who have exceptional talents or interests in such subject areas as art, music, or theater. For further information pertaining to financial aid, students should contact the director of student financial aid at the College.
Admission Requirements
Limestone College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, national origin, financial need, or physical handicap. Each candidate for admission is evaluated as an individual. The College recommends that applicants have the following high school preparation: English, 4 units; mathematics, 3 units; foreign language, 2-4 units; laboratory science, 2 or more units; and social sciences, 2 units. Applicants must submit an official transcript of the secondary school record, scores on the SAT I, and a nonrefundable $25 application fee.
