Multicultural Profile
Marywood University serves a wide range of students, both nationally and internationally, while maintaining a concern for the education of women, culturally diverse persons and first-generation students. Committed to spiritual, ethical and religious values and a tradition of service, Marywood University provides a framework which enables students both to develop fully as persons and to master the professional and leadership skills necessary for meeting human needs on regional and global levels.
Cultural Diversity
The mission statement of Marywood University identifies "culturally diverse persons" as one of three groups for which the University maintains particular concern. That concern has been addressed throughout the last decade by the inclusion of cultural diversity promotion in the strategic and operational plans.
Office of Diversity Efforts
Established in 1994, the Office of Diversity Efforts has two objectives: to promote appreciation of diversity and intergroup accord on campus, and to provide assistance to the regional community in addressing diversity concerns and developing intercultural awareness. The Officeís mandate includes cultural diversity and womenís issues. Other campus offices or organizations address other areas of diversity such as disability or sexual orientation.
The University participates in two collaborative efforts to promote appreciation of diversity in the region. Marywood is a charter member of the Lackawanna County Diversity Coalition, an organization of local service providers attempting to assure just and dignified treatment for culturally diverse persons. The University was also instrumental in forming the Northeastern Pennsylvania Diversity Education Consortium, a collaboration of eight higher education institutions and three school districts. Marywoodís Coordinator of Diversity Efforts sits on the Executive Board of the Consortium.
International Club
"A world without borders"
Our organization promotes the cultural and educational interest of everyone, with a focus on international customs. We begin by introducing international students to American students; where they integrate and teach one another about their own way of life. Towards the goal of a more visible and viable ethnic community and exchange, this group is involved in projects that facilitate a sharing among different cultures. Our club motto is " Weíre different colors in the same rainbow," which best describes how we are all different and unique as individuals, but the same deep down inside. International Club membership is open to all students and faculty.
