Marywood University
Scranton, Pennsylvania

College Description
Marywood University is coeducational, comprehensive, residential, and Catholic. Founded in 1915 by the Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Marywood serves men and women from a variety of backgrounds and religions. Marywood enrolls nearly 3,000 students in an array of undergraduate and graduate degree programs and serves thousands more through its School of Continuing Education. Committed to enriching human lives through ethical and religious values and to a tradition of service motivated by a pioneering, progressive spirit, Marywood provides a framework for educational excellence that enables students to develop fully as persons and to master professional and leadership skills necessary for meeting human needs. Marywood's scenic 115-acre campus with modern facilities incorporating both the latest technology and artistic treasures is located in an attractive residential area of Scranton, near the Pocono Mountains. The area offers spectacular scenery and an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities. Marywood is relatively close to several major cities of the Northeast. Traveling by car, it is 1 hour to Binghamton and 2 hours to New York and Philadelphia.
Academic Life
Marywood's degree programs are administered through three degree-granting schools. The Undergraduate School offers degrees in over 50 academic disciplines, including the liberal arts, sciences, business, music, fine arts, social work, and nursing. All students are required to complete core courses in the liberal arts in addition to the courses in their major. Opportunities for undergraduates abound through double majors, honors and independent study programs, practicums, internships, research, and study abroad. A visiting student program allows Marywood retail business management students to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. There is also a cross-registration program with the University of Scranton. Army and Air Force ROTC programs are also available. Study-abroad opportunities are offered in several countries, including Canada, England, France, Mexico, and Spain.
Campus Life
Marywood's 50 social organizations, including Drama Club, Concert Choir, Collegiate Volunteers, Ski Club, Outdoor Adventure Club and Radio Club, provide numerous opportunities for student involvement. In addition to these there are several academic honor societies and clubs and varsity sports. Services available to students include a health center that reflects a wellness philosophy; free use of printers and computers in all computer labs and residence halls; phones and internet wiring in each residence room; tutoring; personal counseling; career counseling; spiritual direction; and many social activities, plays, concerts, games, and recreational sport activities. There are also special services to preserve the security of the campus. In addition to organizing and promoting activities and programs, the Student Government works to assure awareness of students' rights and responsibilities and promotes programs of organized volunteer activities. The Student Government operates through a number of committees, including committees to serve the needs of residents and commuters, a committee devoted to enriching weekly student activity functions, and committees to support the governance of the University.
Diversity
Marywood University serves a wide range of students, both nationally and internationally, while maintaining a concern for the education of women, culturally diverse persons and first-generation students.
Established in 1994, the Office of Diversity Efforts has two objectives: to promote appreciation of diversity and intergroup accord on campus, and to provide assistance to the regional community in addressing diversity concerns and developing intercultural awareness.
Facilities and Resources
A multimillion-dollar Center for Natural and Health Sciences houses state-of-the-art science laboratories, a multimedia computer lab, a state-of-the-art multimedia lecture hall, and three computer labs connected to the campus fiber-optic network.
