College Description
Monmouth University is a private, moderate-sized coeducational institution committed to providing a learning environment that enables men and women to pursue their educational goals and realize their full potential for making significant contributions to their community and society. Small classes, which allow for individual attention and student-faculty dialogue, together with careful academic advising and career counseling, are hallmarks of a Monmouth education.
The student body is diverse, with a population of 4,200 undergraduates and 1,440 graduate students. Although most are from the Northeast, nineteen states and thirty-five nations are represented, and there is a rich ethnic mix. Of the 3,600 full-time students enrolled, more than 1,600 live on campus in traditional residence halls and garden apartment complexes. Both resident and commuting students have a wide variety of extracurricular activities to choose from: an active Student Government Association; the campus newspaper and FM radio station; the yearbook and the literary magazine; the African-American Student Union; Hillel and Christian Ambassadors organizations; almost twenty-five special interest groups; theater; intramurals; and sororities and fraternities that engage in service work on behalf of the University and of the community. Many special events are planned each year, including art exhibits, concerts, lectures, sightseeing trips, and more.
Academic Life
Monmouth University offers twenty-six baccalaureate degree programs within five schools. The School of Business Administration awards bachelor's degrees in business administration with concentrations in accounting, economics, finance, management, and marketing. The School of Education awards bachelor's degrees that allow students to earn certification as a nursery and elementary teacher (N8), as a subject teacher (K12), or as a special education teacher. The School of Humanities and Social Sciences awards bachelor's degrees in the areas of anthropology, art, communication, criminal justice, English, foreign language, history, historypolitical science, music/theater arts, political science, psychology, and social work. The School of Humanities and Social Sciences includes the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies. The School of Science, Technology and Engineering awards bachelor's degrees in biology, chemistry, clinical lab sciences, computer science, mathematics, medical technology, and software engineering. This school houses the Center for Technology Development and Transfer. The School of Nursing and Health Studies awards the Bachelor of Science in Nursing to upper-division transfer students. A preprofessional advising program is available for students who intend to pursue careers in medicine, dentistry, or other health-care fields. Monmouth also offers an accelerated degree program, the Graduate Scholars Program, to enable students to achieve both a bachelor's and master's degree in just five years.
In addition to its undergraduate degree programs, Monmouth offers eighteen graduate degree programs in business administration, computer science, corporate and public communication, criminal justice, education, electrical engineering, health-care management, history, liberal studies, nursing, psychological counseling, social work, and software engineering. There are also fourteen graduate certificate programs.
Campus Life
The location of the Universityin a quiet residential area of an attractive community near the Atlantic Ocean, yet a little more than an hours drice from the metropolitan attractions of New York and Philadelphiais an appealing feature. The University's safe and secure 147-acre campus, considered to be one of the most beautiful in New Jersey, includes among its forty-five buildings a harmonious blending of traditional and contemporary architectural styles. The centerpiece building is Woodrow Wilson Hall, a National Historic Landmark that houses administrative offices and humanities classrooms. Monmouth's $6.5-million business administration building, Bey Hall; a $4-million renovation of the technology building, Howard Hall; and a $4.7 million renovation of the Edison Science Hall provide students with a first-class learning environment. The University has plans to construct two new buildings: the Center for Communication and Instructional Technology and the Multipurpose Activity Center. Restaurants, shops, and theaters are within easy reach, and several large shopping malls and the PNC Bank Arts Center, an entertainment hub, are only a few miles away. Another advantage is proximity to many high-technology firms, financial institutions, and a thriving business-industrial sector. These provide not only employment possibilities for graduates but also the opportunity for undergraduates to gain practical experience through various internships and the cooperative education program conducted by the University.
Monmouth's Student Government Association is an important and necessary voice in the University community. Seven senators from each class, along with certain elected officials, express clear and definite opinions and cast votes on University policy. Student representatives are present at all faculty meetings and other resolution-adopting events to present the opinions of the student body. All students are strongly encouraged to participate in these activities.
Facilities and Resources
The Guggenheim Library holds 248,000 volumes and 1,300 periodicals. Academic programs are supported by state-of-the-art computer hardware and software and classroom/laboratory facilities. The major components supporting Monmouth's academic programs include UNIX, Windows NT, and Novell server systems connected by a sophisticated campus Ethernet network spanning twenty-three buildings and encompassing more than 1,000 workstations campuswide. Workstations that are specifically dedicated to student use are distributed among thirty instructional and open-use laboratories and include DEC-Alpha servers, Silicon Graphics servers and workstations, SUN servers and workstations, Pentium servers and workstations, and Macintosh workstations. Laptop plug-in ports are available in convenient locations across campus. A campus communications network (HawkNet) connects all Monmouth University computing resources to the Internet. All students receive a computer account that provides them with e-mail, World Wide Web browsing and authoring tools, and electronic access to the Guggenheim Library catalog. The Lauren K. Woods Theatre offers students an opportunity to experience all phases of the theater arts, from acting to lighting. All control of the various aspects of a theatrical performance is maintained by students. There are communications facilities for both radio and television, and the University supports a student-run FM radio station. There are also a student-run greenhouse and studios for art and music majors.
Monmouth students are accorded many special services, including the full resources of the Learning and Career Advising Center, which is staffed by academic and other professional personnel who offer academic advising in addition to individual personal and career counseling. Academic skills services, including the Math Center, the Reading Center, the Writing Center, and the Peer Tutoring Office, provide personalized academic assistance. There are offices to serve students with disabilities and international students. Employment counseling is available through the Placement Office. The Health Center makes available basic medical care.

The gymnasium has an Olympic-size indoor pool, regulation-size basketball courts, and a training room and fitness center. Outdoor facilities include tennis and in-line skating courts, an all-weather track, baseball, football, soccer, and softball fields.
Financial Aid
Monmouth University believes that qualified students should not be denied an educational opportunity due to lack of financial resources. The financial aid staff counsels students and their families and assists them in obtaining the maximum financial aid to which they are entitled. In a cooperative effort, the University utilizes institutional, federal, and state resources and expects a reasonable family contribution toward the student's cost of attendance. In developing each student's award package, all resources available are utilized to address individual circumstances and to provide equitable treatment for all applicants. A wide range of institutional scholarships and grants is offered to the incoming class each year. Award amounts vary according to the quality of the student's previous academic record and housing status. They range up to a maximum of tuition and fees. The scholarship and grant program is available to all prospective full-time freshman and transfer students. Award amounts are renewed at the same level each year for the student's four-year undergraduate career. Scholarship recipients are required to maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA; merit grant recipients must maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA; incentive grant recipients must maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA. Grants and scholarships for this program are offered without regard to financial need. Since resources are not unlimited, priority is given to students who are in full-time attendance and have filed in a timely fashion. All awards are subject to the availability of funds. Students and their families are strongly encouraged to call or visit the Financial Aid Office for assistance.
