College Description / Campus Visit
Located in the historic Fenway area of Boston, Massachusetts, Simmons College has educated women for enriching careers and useful, independent lives for nearly a century. A private, four-year women's college founded in 1899, Simmons offers over 40 undergraduate degrees in the liberal arts and professional areas. Advanced graduate degrees are offered through the College of Arts and Science and Professional Studies and through the Schools of Social Work, Library and Information Science, Management and Health Studies. The Dorothea Lynde Dix Scholars Program offers undergraduate degrees to women beyond the age of traditional college students. Simmons is best known for its small classes, access to the faculty and internship opportunities. One of the main goals of a Simmons education is to prepare women to be well-informed, open minded, and intellectually curious. In keeping with this objective, the Simmons approach to liberal arts education is flexible, and the curriculum allows each student to develop a program suited to her individual interests and career plans.
Academic Life
Simmons College offers over 40 undergraduate academic programs leading to a bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree in the areas of business, health science and the liberal arts. The graduate programs and schools celebrate a rich history of excellence in curriculum. Master's and doctoral degrees are offered through the Schools of Social Work, Library and Information Science and Archives Management, Management and Health Sciences. Simmons also offers coeducational and graduate programs in a variety of other professional and liberal arts areas, such as children's literature, communications management, education, English, French, Spanish and liberal studies. Grounded in a strong liberal arts tradition, a Simmons education also keeps students in touch with "real world" challenges through internships and other independent learning opportunities.
Campus Life
Simmons is a true academic and learning community designed to offer students the benefits of a women's college. There are two distinctive campuses-one for living, one for learning-with a short walk between them. The residence campus is a beautiful landscaped quadrangle featuring nine residence halls-most with double rooms-and a central dining hall. Eighty percent of Simmons freshmen live on campus. There are a variety of living options available, such as smoke-free environments, limited visitation floors and 24-hour quiet floors. There is also a Wellness Hall that emphasizes a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Students also have the option of creating their own living/learning communities to suit their own interests. All students have access to e-mail, and each residence hall is wired for individual computer hook-ups. Bartol Hall, the main campus dining facility and the Holmes Sports Center are also located here. In pursuing extracurricular interests, students can choose from over 35 clubs and organizations.
Diversity
Simmons College is committed to maintaining and supporting a multicultural community, and our international students are a key part of this commitment. Our students come from many different racial, ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds. They represent almost every state in the U.S. and close to 30 countries. African American, Latina, Asian American, multiracial, and Native American students make up about 20 percent of the undergraduate student body.
Facilities and Resources
The Simmons College Libraries consist of several major components, which provide access to a book and journal collection of more than 260,000 volumes and over 2,000 periodical subscriptions. The Beatley Library is the main college library, and it houses the bulk of these titles. Simmons libraries offer important automated services and provide a limited number of public terminals for e-mail and for World Wide Web access. Microcomputers are available in the Microcomputer Laboratory for students, faculty and staff; assistance in their use is offered by student consultants. The Park Science Center has more than 50 laboratories and classrooms, environmental rooms and special research facilities, including rooms for psychological testing, individual laboratories, food science kitchens and physical therapy laboratories. The center contains a variety of research instruments, including a computer-supported SCAT system. The Advising and Academic Support Center provides an array of services to undergraduate and graduate students, including assisting with study skills development, time management and test preparation. The Career Services and Student Employment Office assists students at all stages of their career development.
Simmons offers NCAA Division III varsity programs in basketball, crew, cross country, field hockey, novice crew, sailing, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field and volleyball, all of which are supported by professional coaches and sports medicine staff. The Holmes Sports Center features a competitive eight-lane swimming pool; on-deck spa and sauna; a gymnasium consisting of one regulation wood floor basketball court, two regulation volleyball courts, three badminton courts, two racquetball courts and two squash courts; indoor suspended running area; dance studio; two rowing tanks; and three fitness rooms including Eagle weight equipment, free weights and cardiovascular training equipment such as treadmills, rowing ergometers, stationary bicycles and stairmasters.
Financial Aid
Simmons makes its educational opportunities available to as many promising students as possible and welcomes applications from students who could not meet their expenses at the College without assistance. Over 70 percent of students receive some form of financial aid (scholarships, loans and/or Federal Work-Study). Awards are based on need as demonstrated by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the Simmons College Financial Aid Application. The priority financial aid deadline for freshmen is February 1. Simmons offers two types of academic scholarships for incoming students: the Honors Scholarship and the Dorothy Boulding Ferebee Scholarship.
Admission Requirements / Application
Candidates for admission to the undergraduate College should have completed a college preparatory sequence that included four years of English, three years of mathematics, two or more years of science and two years of a foreign language. The credentials that each applicant must submit are the application form, SAT I or ACT, secondary school transcript and two letters of recommendation. An interview is strongly encouraged. For students who want to major in physical therapy, volunteer and work experience in the field is a plus. Simmons offers two admission plans for freshman applicants: Early Decision and Regular Decision. There are two deadlines for Early Decision-November 1 (Early Decision I) and January 1 (Early Decision II). The application deadline for Regular Decision is February 1. Transfer candidates are evaluated on a rolling basis. Accepted students who are not able to attend Simmons the semester for which they were accepted may request to have their acceptance deferred to the next semester or the next academic year.
