St. Ambrose University St. Ambrose University.

College Description
Centrally located in Davenport, Iowa, on the banks of the Mississippi River, St. Ambrose is three hours from Chicago, one hour from Iowa City, Iowa, and one hour from Dubuque, Iowa.

What you will find here is a liberal arts philosophy, a strong Catholic heritage and 2800 students, both undergrad and graduate. Almost 1000 live on campus, creating a close-knit community of faculty, staff and students. Most classes have less than 20 students, so your professors will know you personally.

Founded in 1882, St. Ambrose today sprawls across a residential area of Davenport, one of four cities that make up the metro Quad Cities (pop. 320,000), half-way between Des Moines and Chicago. Here you have access to big-city resources, like shopping malls and corporate internships, and you get to learn in the atmosphere of a hometown midwestern college.

St. Ambrose is ideal for students who want their education to be challenging, but want extra encouragement and support as well.

Academic Life
Whatever you want to study, you can find it here. From computers to political science to theology, we've got it. St. Ambrose has more than 60 programs-in the arts and sciences, business, human services.

Some of our most popular majors are business administration, communication, education and the health sciences.

At the master's level, we offer degrees in occupational and physical therapy, business, education, criminal justice, pastoral studies and social work.

Through the study abroad office, you can earn up to 30 credit hours while living and studying in Ecuador, Mexico, France, Spain, England, Ireland, Italy, China and other countries. Choose from year-long, one-semester and two-week experiences.

At some point, all students feel challenged academically in college, but all can succeed if given the right support system. Ambrose's Academic Support Center offers free tutoring, study skills enhancement sessions and study groups.

More than 80 percent of first-year students sign up for New Student Seminar, a one-credit course that covers time management, personal development and career orientation.

Campus Life
There are more than 40 campus clubs and organizations, from jazz band to the ski club. The student-run Campus Activities Board brings in comedians and bands, and students can always get involved with the student-run cable TV and FM radio stations.

Community involvement has always been important on campus, and many student groups are active in service and outreach programs, including Hunger Week on campus and service trips to Appalachia during spring break. You can also earn credit hours through the Service Learning program, which integrates community work into your major field.

When you're ready to get off campus, there's professional hockey and basketball, major rock concerts, an entertainment district along the river, several shopping malls, and an 18-plex movie theater, all within a short drive from campus.

Facilities and Resources
St. Ambrose covers six blocks in residential Davenport, so you never have to walk far to get to class. There are four traditional residence-style halls on campus. Plus, juniors and seniors have the option of living in the campus townhouses or an apartment-style residence building that opened in 1996. All student rooms are furnished and wired for the Internet.

We're very proud of our newest academic building, O'Keefe Library, which opened in 1996. It has study space for 400 students, direct access to on-line journals and databases, a current collection of 150,000 volumes and a comfortable, open atmosphere.

The Galvin Fine Arts Center houses a 1200-seat auditorium, the cable TV studio, KALA-FM radio station, and of course, the theater, art and music programs. The rest of campus includes classroom buildings, the PE Center, Christ the King Chapel, the Bookstore and Coffee Shop.

Athletics & Recreation
About one-third of Ambrose's students are also athletes participating on one of 18 sports teams. Ambrose is an NAIA Division II school, and most teams are members of the Midwest Classic Conference. We have men's and women's teams in basketball, volleyball, cross country, track, golf, soccer and tennis. There is also softball and competitive dance for women, and football and baseball for men. Ambrose athletes are very competitive and consistently come out at or near the top in regional championships.

Recreational sports and intramural teams are big on campus as well. When you need to get away from the books, head over to the PE Center and make use of the racquetball courts, weight rooms, aerobics floor, running track and basketball court. There is also a swimming pool in LeClaire Hall.

Financial Aid
St. Ambrose is one of the most affordable private universities around, and we help more than 90 percent of our students with financial aid. Merit-based scholarships are awarded for academic achievement, athletics, music, theater and art. Need-based scholarships, grants and loans are available from the federal and state government and St. Ambrose.

To apply for financial aid, you must fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid), which is a federal form. It is available from St. Ambrose on or the web at www.fafsa.gov. To have priorty status for aid at St. Ambrose, you must have your FAFSA in by March 1. The deadline to be considered for the Iowa Tuition Grant is June 1.

Contact the Financial Aid Office at 800/383-2627 or finaid@sau.edu for more information.

Admission Requirements
St. Ambrose follows a rolling admission policy, which means you can apply anytime, but most students do so between September and June. Applications are available by calling 800/383-2627 or on the Ambrose website.

To apply to St. Ambrose, you must have a cumulative grade-point average of 2.5 or above on an unweighted 4.0 scale from an accredited high school. In addition, you must graduate in the top half of your high school class, or you must have a composite score of at least 20 on the ACT I or at least 950 on the SAT. Students who don't meet all the requirements can be admitted on a provisional basis.

In Addition
A new apartment-style residence hall will open on campus for the fall 2000 semester. The Galvin Fine Arts Center brings nationally known dance, music and theater to campus. Students get free admission to all events. In one semester, student groups volunteered more than 2870 hours of service in the community. St. Ambrose started offering a doctorate in business administration in 1999. Occupational therapy and physical therapy are two of our most popular graduate programs. All student rooms are wired to the Internet. Students can buy new and used textbooks at www.sau.edu/bookstore/
