Stevens Institute of Technology
Castle Point on Hudson
Hoboken, New Jersey 07030

The Stevens Engineering and Applied Sciences building.
College Description
Founded in 1870 as the first American institution to devote itself to engineering based on scientific principles, Stevens Institute of Technology is now an independent university offering undergraduate programs for men and women in business, engineering, the applied sciences, computer science, and humanities, as well as over thirty programs leading to a master's and doctorate degree. Research is vital to the Institute's mission and is essential in attracting and maintaining faculty who are leaders in their field. An honor system has been in place since 1907, and Stevens became the first institution in the country to require all undergraduates to have a personal computer. The majority of undergraduates live on the 55-acre campus in Hoboken, one of the most exciting small towns on the East coast. Stretches of green lawns, old elms and maples, and historic classroom buildings overlook the majestic Hudson River and the New York City skyline - just ten minutes away.
Academic Life
Stevens is known for developing sharp, well-rounded problem solvers poised for success. Therefore, the rigorous education in technical, scientific, mathematical and management subjects is balanced with a required group of eight humanities courses and six physical education courses. Many undergraduates must also complete a Senior Design project to earn one of three baccalaureate degrees: the Bachelor of Engineering, the Bachelor of Science, or the Bachelor of Arts. Stevens' Scholars Program entitles academically talented students to earn their bachelor's degree in three years or their bachelor's and master's degree in four years at no additional tuition cost. Stevens offers preprofessional programs in medicine and dentistry (seven years), as well as law (six years). The ever-popular Cooperative Education program allows undergraduates to combine classroom and employment experience, while networking and earning more than $45,000. Studying abroad in the U.S. Army and Air Force ROTC, and cross enrollment with New York University provide other opportunities to earn academic credit. Classes run on a semester schedule and during the summer.
Campus Life
Stevens students are key members of the community, so they have a voice on campus. The Student Government Association (SGA) directs many of the student organizations and activities, including TechFest and Boken. Other elected groups include: Athletic Council, Commuter Council, Greek Council, and Inter-dormitory Council. There are over 70 special interest clubs, including ethnic, religious, and professional organizations, performing arts and publication groups, ten fraternities, and three sororities. Residence hall rooms have computer hook-ups and students have a computer with free access to e-mail, Netscape, and other software via the campus network from classrooms and labs as well. Students have a faculty advisor and free tutoring services are available. The Howe Center houses a bowling alley, game room, Campus Store, Cafe on the Hudson, Colonel John's, Pierce Dining Hall, convenience store, post office, and student P.O. boxes. And when you want to get away from it all, Hoboken is packed with great restaurants, shops, and night clubs, plus New York City is only minutes away by car, bus, or subway.
Facilities and Resources
Overlooking New York City, the park-like campus is a highly developed, computer networked environment. The Computer Center is the core, with computer-aided design, manufacturing, and education labs, computer graphics labs, and robotics sites distributed throughout campus. Currently, all undergraduates are given a state-of-the-art personal notebook. The entire campus has been rewired to accomodate their use in classrooms, labs and residence halls. Specialized facilities used for academic and research purposes by Stevens and outside corporations include the Noise and Vibration Control Lab, the Blandford Water Lab, the Optical Metallography Lab, the Plasma and Surface Physics Lab, and the Nicoll Environmental Process Lab among dozens of others. The Samuel C. Williams Library contains 130,000 volumes and subscribes to 1,000 periodicals, plus you can gather information via 200 computerized databases.
Athletics/Sports
The Stevens Ducks compete at the NCAA Division III level. There are ten varsity teams for men (basketball, baseball, cross country, fencing, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, track, and volleyball) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, fencing, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, tennis, track and volleyball). Other intercollegiate competition includes club teams (cheerleading, chess, paintball, sand beach volleyball, skiing, swimming (men), and yachting) and a multitude of intramural teams.
Financial Aid
Stevens makes admissions decisions on the basis of a student's credentials without regard to the family's ability to pay for education costs. This is known as "need blind" admissions. All admission applications are reviewed for merit-based scholarships. Students who wish to be considered for all other forms of assistance should be the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), available after January 1; forms should be returned no later than February 15. For families that are eligible for aid, the Financial Aid staff will provide resources and options to help afford a Stevens education, such as grants, loans, and part-time employment.
Admission Requirements
Admission is very selective. The most important criterion is a student's academic performance. The Admissions Committee looks closely at courses taken, grades received, class rank, if applicable, and standardized test scores. Stevens requires the SAT I or ACT. Accelerated pre-med and pre-dentistry applicants must take the SAT I and three SAT II exams. Currently, the average score of accepted students is 620 verbal and 680 math. We require an on campus interview for all students within a 250-miles radius of Hoboken. Arrangements are made for all other applicants to meet with an area alumnus. Early decision candidates must apply by December 1. Accelerated pre-med and pre-dentistry applicants: January 1. All other freshman applicants, including international students: February 1. Transfer students: July 1 (fall) and December 1 (spring).
