College Description
Western New England College began operations offering classes to adult students at the YMCA in downtown Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1919. The College's beautiful 215-acre suburban campus was developed in a residential section of Springfield starting in 1959. The College is centrally located less than 100 miles from Hartford, Connecticut; Albany, New York; Boston, Massachusetts; and Providence, Rhode Island, while New York City is an easy three-hour drive. A private, four-year coeducational college known for individualized instruction and small classes taught by professors (rather than by teaching assistants), the College offers full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate programs. Undergraduate degree programs are offered through the Schools of Arts and Sciences, Business and Engineering. The School of Law offers the Juris Doctor, the Office of Continuing Education coordinates master's programs in business and engineering and instruction for part-time undergraduate students. There are approximately 2,000 full-time undergraduates, with the total enrollment at approximately 5,000. The College is committed to its Wholistic Student Development Program, seeking to provide the student with a comprehensive educational experience inside and outside the classroom.
Academic Life
Western New England College offers more than 30 academic programs at the baccalaureate degree level in the School of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, and School of Engineering. The School of Arts and Sciences offers majors in areas such as social work and criminal justice. The pre-pharmacy and pre-physician assistant programs are affiliated with the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in Boston. The School of Business seeks to provide an environment in which students can develop their leadership and problem-solving skills in such areas as accounting, general business, and management. The School of Engineering offers personalized, lab-intensive programs leading up to a senior design project, giving many students an opportunity to work with industrial sponsors in an actual engineering setting. The College also offers academic programs in elementary and secondary education, as well as pre-professional studies in law and medicine. Students receive hands-on experience through internships and fieldwork. The College's 3+3 law program offers eligible students an opportunity to earn their bachelor's degree and a Jun's Doctor in six years instead of seven The College has a two-semester calendar and a limited summer school program. Western New England College also offers a study abroad program. Students have spent summers or semesters in such countries as Switzerland, England, Nigeria, Spain, Mexico ,and France.
Campus Life
The Campus Center is the focal point of student life, and it houses the student newspaper, WNEK radio station, a modern cafeteria and snack bar, game room, TV lounge and other campus facilities. A strong sense of community is apparent in every aspect of campus life at the College. The Campus Activities Board coordinates student activities such as lecture programs, films, concerts, performing arts, recreation and special events such as Homecoming, Family and Friends Weekend and Spring Week, all of which students help plan and coordinate. Students can choose from over 60 clubs and organizations, which give them an opportunity to enhance their participation in cocurricular endeavors and academic experience. Traditional-style freshman residence halls as well as suites, garden-style apartments and land townhouses are available for the students. All students have access to e-mail, word processing, and the Internet.
Diversity
The Office of Diversity Programs and Services promotes an understanding and appreciation of diversity on campus. This is achieved through multicultural programs, and various outreach and support services that help students transition into college life while enhancing their academic success. Services offered include multiethnic and multicultural workshops and programs, including: Black History Month, Women's History Month, Hispanic Awareness Month, and in-class presentations on diversity and sensitivity issues. Serving all students regardless of ethnicity, student input, participation, and attendance is encouraged for all activities coordinated by the office.
The office also advises students of color and international students. For international students, the office is responsible for processing immigration paperwork and acting as the liaison between international students and the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services.
Facilities and Resources
Western New England College's 215-acre suburban campus contains 19 major buildings and is known for its beauty and well-maintained buildings and grounds. Classes are held in five classroom-laboratory buildings, with no large lecture halls, and the average class size is 21 students. The D'Amour Library is fully automated, containing 119,000 volumes. It receives 200 paper subscriptions to journals and offers access to 2,000 journals through the library's electronic indexes. The College provides students with a wide range of computing facilities, such as a microcomputer lab with 100 personal computers that are all accessible to the Internet. Internet services are facilitated by a Data General Aviion 5500 multiprocessor UNIX server that supports e-mail and the World Wide Web. The Writing Center houses an additional 50 computers for word processing and English instruction. The Alumni Healthful Living Center, which was built in 1993, is one of the best college athletic and recreational facilities in the Northeast. The 158,000-square-foot center includes a large fieldhouse, an eight-lane pool, an indoor track, racquetball and squash courts, a multipurpose and wrestling room, an aerobics room, a weight room with state-of-the-art equipment, a wellness/cardiovascular room and other facilities. The College's resident students live in a variety of accommodations ranging from traditional residence halls to room suites with semiprivate baths to garden-style apartments grad townhouses with full kitchens and baths.
Athletics/Sports
Western New England College sponsors intramural programs and NCAA Division III varsity sports. Non-NCAA participation also includes men and women's bowling and martial arts Men's sports include baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, and wrestling. Women's sports include basketball, cross-country, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball. Intramural sports include tennis, squash, volleyball, flag football, floor hockey, racquetball, and basketball. The Alumni Healthful Living Center includes studios for racquetball, wrestling and aerobics, a large free weight room and exercise machine center, an eight-lane Olympic-size swimming pool, an indoor running track and basketball courts.
Financial Aid / Scholarships
Western New England College offers an extensive financial assistance program in the form of scholarships/grants, student loans and part-time employment. Work opportunities are available both on campus and in the community. Due to the academic demands upon a student's time, it is recommended that a full-time student work no more than 20 hours per week. Students seeking financial aid must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the Western New England College financial aid application and a copy of the federal income tax return, 1040. In 2000-01, approximately 80% of the full-time undergraduate student body received financial assistance; the average award was $11,042. Notification of financial aid awards are made on a rolling basis.
Admission Requirements
Admission is offered to students on a rolling basis for all programs. Students must submit the Western New England College admissions application, the SAT I or ACT scores, an official secondary school transcript and a recommendation from a guidance counselor or teacher. International students can substitute the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for the SAT I or ACT test. American students for whom English is not their first language are encouraged to submit TOEFL scores. Transfer students must also submit official transcripts for any collegiate work. An essay is not required, but essays and personal statements are welcomed. A campus visit and interview are encouraged. Applicants must have graduated from an approved secondary school or have obtained an equivalency diploma (GED). The minimum units of high school preparation should include four units of English, two units of mathematics, one unit of laboratory science, and one unit of U.S. history. Students seeking admission to the School of Business and various majors within the School of Arts and Sciences are required to have three units of mathematics, while engineering applicants are required to have four units of mathematics. The School of Engineering and various School of Arts and Sciences majors require more than the minimum one unit of laboratory science.
